Joining the Fraternity

Delta Upsilon has never meant to appeal to the masses. Many of the current brothers had no inclination to join a fraternity in college at first; however, DU is not the typical fraternity. Delta Upsilon is committed to personal excellence on the part of its members yet we stirve to enjoy the experience as well. We are unique and we intend to stay that way.

As we have said for so many years in Delta Upsilon "We can not, we will not tolerate mediocrity." We have heritage, we have the experience, we have the knowledge and we have the commitment. If you join Delta Upsilon you are not just joining a fraternity, you are joining a Brotherhood of Renaissance men who have pledged themselves to uphold the principles of promoting friendship, developing character, diffusing liberal culture, and advancing justice.

When is Rush?
What is Rush and how does it work?
What kind of committments do I make by choosing to rush?
What happens after I accept a bid from Delta Upsilon?
Will I be a victim of physical abuse or hazing of any kind?
I still have questions about rushing and pledging DU! How do I get them answered?

Q: When is Rush?

A: The official rush for the 2006 spring semester begins in the spring, probably. However, DU has an open rush policy so at any time of the year if you are interested in joining, you have the opportunity to do so.

Q: What is Rush and how does it work?

A: Every fall and spring semester there is a weeklong period in which any persons interested in fraternity life may attend the rush events of Delta Upsilon or any other fraternity at MC. Every night during rush week, each fraternity will host an event ranging from cookouts to bowling. Attendance at the events is non-binding. Concluding the week on bid night, each fraternity will hand out invitations to certain individuals of their choosing. By accepting one of these bids from Delta Upsilon, you will become an associate member of the fraternity. DU's bids are generally accepted the last night of rush week, but for they may be held up to a year.

Q: What kind of committments do I make by choosing to rush?

A: You make NO committments when attending the rush events of ANY fraternity. You only make a committment if you choose to accept a bid. That leaves the question of why anyone would choose to not rush. Depending on the fraternity and the event, you're given free entertainment, free food, and a great time with no strings attached.

Q: What happens after I accept a bid from Delta Upsilon?

A: You will be given the location of a public meeting place on campus where you will gather and meet the other men who have chosen to accept their bids and become associate members. Here you will be greeted and then escorted back to the DU house. Once you arrrive at the fraternity you will be congratulated by the rest of the DU Brothers for accepting your bid and taking your first step towards becoming an active member of our brotherhood.

Q: Will I be a victim of physical abuse or hazing of any kind?

A: No! The Brothers of Delta Upsilon do not physically abuse or haze their associate members. If you ever feel uncomfortable for any reason or you feel you are being treated unfailry, immediately contact the neares DU officer and he will assist you. You will not be forced to do anything against your will!

Q: I still have questions about rushing and pledging DU! How do I get them answered?

A: The easiest way to obtain answers to your questions is to ask a DU brother, and the easiest way to meet a DU brother, aside from visiting our chapter house (the one with the big white pillars) is to check us out during rush. We are a non-secret fraternity and we encourage you to ask questions. If you have questions that you would like to be answered immediately, please contact Bryan Jenks, VP of Recruitment, at jenksb@marietta.edu
